Birthdays, Barnyards, and Blow-Torches?

Independence Weekend is also Birthday Weekend in the Winkler house. Half birthdays, that is.

It's when we celebrate Adam and Natalia's 1/2 birthdays with the rest of our family and they give gifts.

We reserve our gift for the actual birth day when we celebrate, just the 4 of us. This tradition works well for our household that has 3 birthdays in the week before and after Christmas, it sets aside family time for each person to be celebrated, and it keeps our holiday schedule manageable.

So far, the kids enjoy the same kind of thing, so decorating a cake was pretty easy.

After everyone was adequately sugared up we decided the best thing to do next was to play with fire. But there was a decent wind a blowin' and we had trouble lighting the sparklers. Someone jokingly suggested a blow-torch. They should know better than to say such a thing around my husband. ;-)

This is how I remember handling sparklers as a child...holding it as far away from my body as possible!

Good times. :-)

What fun! The cake is awesome, too!

We haven't tried sparklers yet with the kids...I'm not brave.

You did such a great job on the cake. My boys want a superman icecream cake. I can do the icecream cake part. Have any suggestions on how to do the superman part? I am SO NOT a cake decorator. But, I love my kids, so I'm going to try.

I love the "half birthday weekend" idea. With an anniversary the day after Christmas, one child's birthday in early January, and another child due in December, it seems like all the occasions come at the same moment. May have to borrow this idea!
