One Week Old
Just after midnight this morning there was a 3.3 earthquake within 5 miles of our house. Both Pete and I were awake to take notice. The whole house shook and there was a loud boom-like thunder sound. Honestly though, our house in MD shook worse when the nearby military base would set things off over the Bay. Of course this comparison was followed by comments from my hubby on the nature of sound waves...that's my honey for ya! :o) Ever thinking of the science behind things.
We had a very relaxing Christmas Day at my parents house preceded by a short visit with Pete's mom and brother here on Christmas Eve. I personally felt so much more rested the morning of the 25th because our little man decided to sleep/feed a bit better. The two nights since have been even better. He's still more alert during the night, but is making that transition steadily. I find my mental faculties have improved too--surprise surprise--as he now is pretty much on a 2-3 hours schedule.
Things are SOOOOOO different this time around. I know some of it is just the plain and simple facts--Natalia came home from the hospital with her feeding schedule already established by the nurses, she ended up being formula fed for various reasons, AND I physically didn't recuperate for weeks after because we were traveling nearly every day.
What a blessing to have this sweet little one home already, to be feeling nearly back to my normal self, and to have my hubby home on Christmas break!

B-Day Plus 3
Here is a pic from this morning.
Were having Pete's mother and brother for dinner tonight, so he's been preparing a few things to add to what they're bringing. Natalia was thrilled to help stir the nalesniki (crepe) batter. All of the chopping he was doing earlier for the Polish Vegetable Salad wasn't something she could lend a hand with. If I remember later I'll take a picture of our traditional spread.
When you think of us, please pray that we would have the grace and strength to make all the transitions necessary in the upcoming days and weeks. Adam has his nights and days mixed up and is wanting to nurse (or camp out there) constantly. I am so very thankful he's feeding well--just not getting any sleep as a result. (Last night I think he wanted to set a record or something. He rooted like crazy for nearly 5 hours straight.) Talking with a nurse this afternoon gave me a gameplan--but I still need much strength and patience as Adam settles into a routine.
For now though we are simply enjoying having some days at home, relaxing and being with those we love.
Merry Christmas Eve Everyone!

Latest Stats
Around 5pm I began having definitive contractions (not just a hardening belly and then some wiggling from him to confuse me) every 15 minutes for an hour. They gradually worked themselves down to 7-8 mins. apart around 10pm, but by the time I went to bed and finally fell asleep they had fizzled out to nothing. This morning? Nada. Zilch.
I had my weekly checkup at 9:45 this morning at which time the midwife said, "his head is definately all the way down now (YEAH!) and you're at 2 1/2 centimeters (OK), do you want me to strip your membranes? (Um, yes please!)
So now I'm feeling real crampy, having occasional contractions but nothing regular, and waiting. That 50/50 chance I'll go into labor within 48 hours is pending. I plan to spend Natalia's naptime on the couch with a book.
Will keep ya'll posted...

Favorite Movies
I recently commented to my hubby that as much as I like movies, rarely do they meet my expectations. I much prefer a well-written and entertaining book! His sentiments are usually the same, though he will admit to being a tortoise when working through a book. I devour books and can't stand it if it takes more than a few days (if that) to finish one!
Anyway, back to the topic at hand: MOVIES
Here is a short list of those that have stood above the rest in my mind. They are in no particular order.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BAND OF BROTHERS
I really like the character "Winters" played by Damian Lewis. The real man behind the actor's portrayal is from this area, so that's especially fascinating, but I found his moral character and courage very inspiring. This film does not glamorize war in the slightest, which was refreshing though hard to watch at times. Gritty.
REMEMBER THE TITANS
I love Denzel Washington! This is technically a sports-drama, but it's also SO much more. You don't have to love football to appreciate the heart behind this well-made movie.
YOU'VE GOT MAIL
I love the quirky interaction between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's characters, and I wouldn't call myself a fan of all of their paired work. Maybe it's because I share a fondness for books, freshly sharpened pencils, autumn, and Scotch tape...dunno, but this one is guaranteed to please in my opinion.
PEARL HARBOR
Yeah, it's typical Hollywood drama, but I like it.
THE BOURNE TRILOGY
If you want a thought-provoking plot look elsewhere, but if you want to sit on the edge of your seat it's a thrilling ride!
THE HORSE WHISPERER
This is one of my favorite, non-animated, animal movie. Of course I was obsessed with horses as a young girl, so it's got that element. I also love Robert Redford and young Scarlet Johannson and the journey they take you on as you seen wounds mended and hearts healed (and hearts wounded...it's not all pretty.)
LITTLE WOMEN
I watch this gem at least once a year--usually during the Christmas season. I love everything about it. (I just acquired the movie's soundtrack and it's delightful, especially during holiday baking!)
FRENCH KISS
There are some lines in this movie that are just classic! And it's got a Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan--what more can I say? I love the wonderful French scenery, the music, the hopelessly flawed attempts by Ryan's character to win back the man she loves, and how everything works out in the end.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
I'm not a fan of many classics, but this one is good. The book is still better (as is usually the case), but it's nice to visualize Gregory Peck as Atticus when reading the book.
SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
I have both the Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet version and the Masterpiece Theatre version that aired on PBS this past spring. The latter is longer and deals more faithfully with the book, but both are excellent.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
One of my favorites! Not only do I love Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle as Mr. Darcy and Ms. Bennet, but you can't help but love and cringe everytime Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Collins appear on screen. When they open their mouths you're guaranteed giggles. They're utterly ridiculous!
WILD HEARTS CAN'T BE BROKEN
It's one of those family-friendly, feel-good movies I first saw as a teen...and again it has a horse in it. If you can find it I highly suggest you check it out the next time you want a refreshing movie experience. Alittle predictable, but low on the cheese factor as far as small films go.
CHARLOTTE'S WEB
I can't help but sing the songs for days afterwards everytime I watch this. One of my favorite childhood books and I look forward to introducing my kiddos to this movie when they're a bit older.
RATATOUILLE
Aside from CINDERELLA and FINDING NEMO, this is a recent animated favorite--I don't have many favorites in this category though.
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE
One of my favorite books by C.S. Lewis! I thought it was particularly well-made and loved those cast as Lucy, Mr. Tumnus, The White Witch, and Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan. A delight for the eyes, even though some scenes can appear a bit technically enhanced...that's part of the fantasy genre I guess.
GLADIATOR
I just find this time period and the Roman culture fascinating, and Russell Crowe does an excellent job in his role. Goes along with my love of Francine Rivers "Mark of the Lion" book series.
STEPMOM
When you get Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, and Ed Harris together on one screen--you're guaranteed movie magic! Add some real-life challenges, imperfect people, humor and sorrow...have a box of tissues handy for the end!
SUPER-SIZE ME
A really enlightening documentary that challenges your mindset about fast food and our food "culture" in general. Did it cure me of my occasional cravings? NO! But it definately makes me evaluate my overall choices.
FAR AND AWAY
I just love this movie. Kidman is feisty, Cruise is scrappy, and both are trying desperately to make a better life for themselves in early America.
Should I Be Admitted?
What do you think? Was I behaving normally, or would you describe it as last-ditch efforts to go into labor?
I laundered 3 loads, I vacuumed both floors, I mopped the kitchen floor on my hands and knees. I thoroughly washed the living room window, inside and out (Yes, it was 32 degrees outside, but I had an extension handle thingy for that part with a sponge and squeegy so it took only 5 minutes!), and dusted our bedroom.
Verdict?
Hanging In There
Anywho--she did have some good news for me! Apparently I went from not being dilated at all last Friday to being 2 centimeters! YAHOO! Of course, that's not indicative of labor in the next day or so, but you never know! I was 2 1/2 the day I went into labor with Natalia, but that was 2 days past 40 wks.
When Pete heard the report and came home from school yesterday, he asked if I wanted to go to BOSTON MARKET for dinner. Why there? Well, that was our "last meal" before going to the hospital to have Natalia. (It didn't work...nice try though Honey!)
All in all, everything is ready for the big day and I'm just going about my normal routine. I'm finding my anxiousness is a bit less than last week after not being dilated at all. Now, I'm just trying to enjoy each moment before the big transition to being a family of 4.
We'll keep you updated...
Polish Vegetable Salad
Every December 24th the same thing happens. The whole day, and that's no exaggeration, is spent cooking and preparing dishes for the evening meal. (And usually we consume it in about 20 minutes, but I digress...) I'm not sure when it became my husband's job to make this salad, but it has been awhile. Since I came on the scene I've helped and somewhat taken over now that a little one is underfoot.
If you decide to try it, I'd suggest making it a day or two before serving as it is ALWAYS better then. (Why don't we do this? Dunno. We'll see where we're at on the 23rd this year--it may be the first time we follow our own advice.)
Oh, and I do need to add that I for one DO NOT like regular potato salad, but this is different because of the subtle sweet and tangy flavors that the apple and pickle bring to this dish. And one way my mother-in-law beefs up the salad is to boil a turnip or two to add. It doesn't really change much about the overall flavor--just helps if you don't want to use as many potatoes. (Now, if any of you regularly have turnips in your household pantry, fess' up! Because I sure don't!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3-4 large potatoes
4 carrots
2 hard-boiled eggs
2 dill pickles
1-2 Granny Smith apples
1 small can sweet peas
mayonaise (I like to use Hellman's Light Mayo)
salt and pepper to taste
For garnish: 1 hard-boiled egg, leftover peas, tomatoes and/or radishes
Cook the potatoes and carrots separately in their skins until soft. Cool completely and peel before coarsely chopping and mixing with most of the peas, peeled and finely minced pickles and apples, and chopped eggs. Stir together in a large bowl adding mayo, salt and pepper to get the "salad" consistency you prefer. Garnish and refrigerate. (We spread a thin layer of mayo on top and don't add as much to the vegetable mixture, then garnish.)
***If you do make this a day or two ahead of time, save adding the mayo and garnishing part until shortly before serving.
Smacznego!

Making The Season Bright
Welcome to our home...
This is my attempt at the snowflake wreath idea I posted a few weeks ago. It's hard to see the gingham bow and old brass bell in the center, but I had fun finding treasures in our basement to reuse...and my parents' backyard supplied all the fresh greens.
Entryway closet door...
I stole this idea just yesterday from my friend for our hallway stairs. If we ever decide to do stockings, I think I'll hang them here...
The nativity pieces on my china hutch...
Bowl of pinecones, walnuts and berries on our dining room table...
And our version of a traditional Polish tree with the straw ornaments. (It'd be even more European if I'd use real candles on the branches, but alas' we're not wishing to burn down the house!)...

I'm praying this Friday's doctor's appointment yields some news of the latter of those categories.

Not Quite Twiddling My Thumbs Yet
I am soooo glad I did my holiday baking and extra meal prep weeks ago...my energy level has just taken a nose-dive!
But there are a few things remaining on my To Do List...
1. Get a haircut and color treatment--folks, the amount of grey was hideous! I told my hairdresser last night that I'd try not to fall asleep in the chair. Two hours later I felt transformed, and ready to go to bed. She has strong fingers and the wash and style at the end was literally a massage...good times.
2. Stock up on household stuff at BJ's: toilet paper, paper towels, diapers for Natalia, laundry detergent, etc.
3. Pack my hospital bag--I've been avoiding it because it means saving a laundered pair of lounge pants that I've practically LIVED in when not leaving the house.
4. Prepare Natalia's things for when we're at the hospital.
5. Clean my refrigerator--it needs a good wipe-down.
6. Knit baby booties. (Just kidding! I have no idea how to do this.)
7. Draft my Christmas letter. (I plan to send it out via email this year--sorry folks if you think that's cheesy, but the finances are tight. Besides, with this blog you practically get a newsletter AND pictures every week.)
8. Take as many naps as possible! (Thank you Lord that Natalia is not on strike from naps this week!)
9. Buy another warm air humidifier.
10. Request some good books from the library. (Any suggestions?)

Just Call Me Paula Dean (Part 2)

Overheard
Once again Natalia has provided more than a few laughs in our household with her comments.
The other night Pete was headed out to watch a football playoff game soon after dinner and so when he sat down at the table decked out in his winter duds (complete with a silly wool hat), Natalia took one look at him, looked at me and said, "Mom, check it out!" as she pointed and giggled. Needless to say, there were laughs all around at that one! (Doesn't that sound so grown up--like a teenager?! Scary!)
On more than one occasion lately when Natalia first gets her lunch or dinner plate and takes a bite, she's said (completely stonefaced), "Mmmmm, this is kinda' good Mom. It's tasty!"
When in the car, she will occasionally give me directions... "turn weft, den weft, den white."
And since two of her buddies are now going to preschool a few days a week, she's been distressed at times because she has to have a few more birthdays till she can go to school too! "How many birt-days till I ride da' bus Mom?"

Just Call Me Paula Dean! (Part 1)
So here is Part 1 of my favorite holiday cookie recipes.

Pecan Tassies
(This is a Stauffer family recipe that my dad's mother used to make when he was a boy.)
Pastry:
2 c. flour
6 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
(This should yield about 4 dozen cups)
Filling:
2 eggs
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. chopped pecans (coconut or raisin)
(This makes enough for 2 dozen cups so double amount or make 2 different kinds)
Directions:
1. Refrigerate dough for 1/2 hour.
2. Roll out dough (no thicker than 1/8") on a lightly floured surface and use a floured drinking glass edge to cut out circles.
3. Form dough cups and lightly place into miniature cupcake pan.
4. Put a small spoonful of filling into each cup--don't fill too full.
5. Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes, then lower temperature to 200 ad bake 10-12 minutes more.
6. Let stand to cool for a few minutes before removing tassies from pan.

Memories
You're welcome to join in on the fun if you'd like.
The rules were to:
1. Go to your sixth picture folder.
2. Select your sixth picture and post it.
3. Pray you remember the details, and explain what the picture was all about.
We've been saving our pictures onto our computer for a few years now, so when I did the math I ended up here:
Early May 2006

We were at my parents house for a visit and Natalia (4 mos. old) was getting a bath in Grandma's kitchen sink...look at those cheeks and her chub! Love it!
(BTW, today you barely notice her scar from surgery, it's so faded.)
She's still hanging onto those cheeks, but is getting quite tall and really thinning out. (Though I'm glad she still has those elbow dimples! I think they're adorable...except on me. HA HA)
Our sweet baby girl will be turning 3 in a month! God has been so very good to us! :o)

Special Delivery!
Remember that empty red wall in our bedroom (our big summer painting project) that's been waiting for it's debut piece?
Well, here's the finished product--and I absolutely LOVE IT!
I gave him a color swatch, a few ideas and said, "think Tuscany", and this is what materialized (with Sarah coaching from the sidelines of course). I wish the photo would have turned out better so you could appreciate the detail. The red patches of flowers really pop against the wall color.
In the words of Natalia this afternoon, "it's bootiful!" don't ya think? She also said, "I want it in MY bedroom!"

Fresh-Cut Snowflake Wreath

Fresh-Cut Snowflake Wreath
Turn Christmas tree trimmings into a one-of-a-kind wreath.
Step 1: Gather six pieces of trimmings from your live Christmas tree. Use shears to cut the pieces to the desired lengths (approximately 13 inches).

Christmas Tag
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Both--I reuse my bags from year to year, or buy plain ones and decorate. I know this sounds crazy, but I almost prefer the wrapping part to the buying!
2. Real tree or Artificial?
I love the smell of a real tree, but with little ones in the house, it's not the most practical. For now we use a nice artificial one.
3. When do you put up the tree?
Usually right after Thanksgiving. I'm typically the one to decorate it, and I always like to have my favorite Christmas albums playing in the background. This year I anticipate a little girl will want to "help".
4. When do you take the tree down?
Usually the tree and decorations disappear sometime after New Year's, but I like to keep the white outdoor lights we string around our deck railing a bit longer.
5. Do you like eggnog?
Not really...the thought of the egg in it grosses me out. Oddly, that's not the case in cookie dough, but I digress. To warm up at this time of year I prefer hot cocoa, coffee/tea, or a glass of wine.
6. Favorite gift received as a child?
Well, since my birthday is so close to Christmas there were years that I received a bigger combo gift. One very special gift was the doll house my dad and mom made for me when I was around 5 yrs. old. My dad is an excellent carpenter and the detailed work that both he and my mom put into this gift is still being enjoyed to this day by the grandkids. Individual shingles, wooden siding, etched window panes, homemade curtains, furniture and plant-hangers...
7. Hardest person to buy for?
My husband (he doesn't give many ideas and always says that he doesn't need anything)
8. Easiest person to buy for?
My daughter (at this age she's constantly growing out of things)
9. Do you have a nativity scene?
I finally found one that is more "ethnically" accurate than most--well, I did change the hair color of Mary and baby Jesus. I especially liked that the wise men in this set truly resembled men from the East. And of course I found it for a great price at a yard sale--still in it's original packaging.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards?
I like to send a photo card and/or yearly letter, but because of the cost and having a blog now I think I'm going to go the email route for most on my list...except for non-computing great-grandparents and a few overseas relatives of course.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
I wouldn't say "worst", because I don't think I've ever received a gift in which to use that term. But I do remember being not so thrilled about receiving gloves or some such "practical" thing when an older child. Now I actually appreciate practical gifts I give suggestions for MORE than surprises since I rarely buy things I don't immediately "need".
12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
It's not really a "Christmas" movie, but I love the overall Christmasy feeling when watching "Little Women".
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
As soon as we figure out how much we're spending and get a few suggestions. (Usually it's not earlier than October/November though.) I usually do all of the shopping and wrapping.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
Only for a "now you have it now you don't" type of exchange.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
I have to narrow it down to one thing?!?!? Sorry, can't do that.
(My mom's gourmet mashed potatoes, my mother-in-law's duck, Polish Vegetable Salad, all of the delicious cookies...)
16. Lights on the tree?
YES! Lots of white ones.
17. Favorite Christmas song?
Again, how do I pick one? "Mary Did You Know?", "Carol of the Bells", and "O Come O Come Emmanuel" are among my favorites.
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Now that we're closer to family we just make short trips--soooooo nice!
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?
I think so...Santa was never a part of Christmas in our household so I'd say it's only been in recent years that I could say so.
20. Angel , star, or other tree topper?
We've used both an angel and a star in past years. Now, I mostly use the handmade straw star that goes with the other straw ornaments often found on trees in Polish households. I really like the way these ornaments look with the ribbon, glass balls, and beaded fruit I also use.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Christmas Eve is the traditional Polish time to have a meal, go to mass and open gifts, so we usually spend that night with my inlaw(s). Christmas Day is always spent with my side of the family. This year will be spontaneous no doubt--maybe even in a hospital room!
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
Static electricity and dry air in the house, getting the flu, stressed out people/drivers...
23. Favorite ornament, theme or color?
My favorites are those that are non-gawdy; in other words, natural, organic colors and materials
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?
I already answered that...oops! Instead I'll say that the BEST GIFT I received (technically it was on my birthday, the 31st) was holding my baby girl for the first time. She was 4 days old and in the NICU at University of Maryland Med. Center awaiting heart surgery. Can't believe that was nearly 3 years ago and now I'll have another sweet-smelling Christmas bundle!
25. What do you want for Christmas this year?
To not still be pregnant! Sleep! (Hmmm...probably won't get both, will I?)

Brrrrrr...
Natalia was sooooo very excited to see it snowing upon first waking up, so when Daddy came home he hardly had to persuade her to go outside to play!
Of course it's nearly melted today, but we received about 3 inches. Maybe we'll actually have a "real" winter this year. (My poor husband will be moaning no doubt, since I'll probably be more reluctant to let him go snowboarding as much with a newborn in the house!)

The Blahs
...but this week I've been fighting the blahs. Anybody identify?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Realizing that there are not only external forces at work, I've been praying and asking the Lord for a spirit of contentment and joy in the midst of this "out-of-sorts" week. Strength to go about my daily tasks and patience to gently instruct the heart of my daughter (who I believe is also sensing change is a-comin' and has been particularly pushing the limits). Diligence in spending quiet moments with the Lord, remembering Him and His Truth throughout my day, and relying on his grace and provision because He is always there.
When I take my eyes off of myself and my circumstances, and I look at Him, my perspective changes. My situation may remain the same, but I don't.
Take a moment to look at the new header photo I posted. Does it not point to our Mighty Creator? Just as He orchestrates the changing of the seasons, He changes hearts...
Change my heart Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me.
The Latest Development
My placenta is completely normal, the lakes I've referred to earlier haven't grown and there's enough room (though Adam and Momma may debate it) for this little man to grow as much as he needs. According to his measurements today the specialist was guestimating that he could be a 9 pounder. (I'm not surprised since Natalia was nearly that at 2 days late.)
I got another glimpse of his face today at the specialist's office--ahhhh, the wonders of technology these days. Albeit there was usually a fist in the way or some unexplained blob, but what I could see made my heart skip a beat...he has the same squooshed nose and plump cheeks as his big sister!
I'm already eating him up... :o)
(Some of you may remember how we wondered if Natalia even HAD a neck for the first few months, her cheeks were so big and delicious.)
Now we just have to sit back and wait since it looks like we're just letting nature take it's course--no early induction plan at this point.
Preparations and Resting in God
The planning has had it's merits, and I'm thankful to have had the energy thus far to carry out most of it. Things like stocking our freezers with prepared meals, starting on some Christmas cookies, washing baby bedding and clothes, and gradually shopping for gifts. Whether my sense of urgency is premature or not, I'm anticipating being even more tired in the next few week.
The part that can quickly take me from the joy of working hard, to the place of worry and fretfulness is when I begin to rely upon my efforts too much and assume my plans are always going to work out the way I've intended. This is nothing new for me really...or confined to pregnancy...but something God's used to show me my tendency towards self-sufficiency over the years.
Am I truly counting on Him to provide for all of my needs?
Am I resting in the good and perfect provision that He HAS given (whether it looks like that to me at the time or not)?
Am I regularly positioning my heart to receive His peace in those seasons when life seems busy and I'm being pulled in many directions?
Am I taking time to sit and be still with Him?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nearly three years ago my "plans" were drastically changed in the matter of moments...my newborn baby girl's life and wellbeing were placed in the hands of strangers while I watched from the sidelines. Yet God's peace was there...and His perfect provision.
I must remind myself to trust only in the Lord as I now plan and wait in expectation for this little boy to arrive.
It's hard not to be anxious for my specialist's appointment next Monday--will he say I'll be induced early? Should I "count on" 3 more weeks or 6?
I must count on the Lord and rest in His timing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In what area of YOUR life are you sensing the need to grow in trusting and resting in Him?
I Love My Mom!
Well, it's probably no secret that one of my absolute FAVORITE things about our move back to Lancaster County is that I'm now able to easily spend time with my family--especially my mom.
I decided to take her to lunch at a place I recently discovered online. It's called The Front Porch Tea Room and it's not far from here.
While in Maryland, going to a tea place was a birthday tradition I often shared with my friend Rebecca, but I had never taken my mom. She finally got to experience "High Tea" with me, and it was OH SO YUMMY! I'll try to remember the countless courses, for they truly were an experience. :o)
We started with a Fruit Ambrosia with Toasted Coconut Topping and a pot of Sweet Almond Tea. That was followed by a House Salad with pine nuts, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries and poppyseed dressing--INCREDIBLE! Next came a platter of warm scones: white chocolate raspberry and apple walnut with jam and clotted cream for on top. We had a choice between a nutty flavored pumpkin soup or spinach rice after that, then tea sandwiches. I especially liked the cucumber on rye and cream cheese salsa on pumpernickle. To finish out our lunch we were offered dessert--either warm gingerbread with lemon sauce and whipped cream, or a vanilla cranberry creme brulee.
Needless to say, we were stuffed by the end of our tea experience.
Most of all I enjoyed the uninterrupted time to sit and talk with my mom--she truly is God's gift to me and I'm so thankful for her godly example and friendship.
Love ya Mom! :o)
Anticipation
Being the planner and visual person that I am, I set about making a big calendar, entering the knowns and holidays (and many family birthdays!) until the end of the year. Then, of course there's the holiday preparations. Thank you Lord both of our families do things VERY simply!
After assigning a week for each of the two kinds of Christmas cookies I'm making to share, and a number of "doubled" meals to freeze, I left the last 2 weeks before my due date to do absolutely NOTHING! I have a short list to shop for--and thankfully we can spread out that expense over the next few weeks. The big question is--WHEN IS THIS BABY COMING? :o)
Before you start to think, "my goodness woman, would you just relax!" let me assure you that my blood pressure is excellent and that there's an explanation...
A few weeks back I posted an update on Baby Adam and my most recent ECHO test (3D ultrasound). There was a little blurb on "placental lakes".
Well, I have my next appointment with the same specialist on November 17th (2 weeks from today). At that point the doctor wants to again make sure that my placental lakes aren't inhibiting the baby's growth, because that could affect his vitals and mean that they'd schedule me to be induced early. (Maybe even at 37 weeks! That's the first week in December people--4 weeks away! AHHHHHH...can you tell I'm nesting?)
:oD
So guess what was on the "schedule" for my hubby and I this weekend? Moving his office things from the 3rd bedroom into the front little nook of our room, emptying the closet and moving all of baby stuff up from the basement. WHAT A JOB!
Pete had to chuckle, walking into the room yesterday--it had been transformed literally overnight, right down to the changing table drawers being stocked with those tiny little diapers!
I'm so glad I made a few trips to the nice consignment stores in our area this summer and found some clearance sales at the outlets. AND, the fact that we didn't find out if Natalia was a boy or girl ahead of time means that we have a bunch of neutral newborn things. Now all I have to do is wash everything.
The other thing I'm anticipating? This election being over...
We've been getting non-stop phone calls and mailings--it's a bit insane!
I plan to get out to the polls sometime tomorrow, and am thankful I have the opportunity to do so, but quite honestly I don't enjoy politics very much. I've forced myself in recent years to be more informed in the election process/candidates, but the tactics often employed by both parties and the media just frustrates me endlessly. I strongly agree AND disagree with aspects of both parties...so it's been hard not to become jaded. BUT...I do feel I've been helped by a few sources this time around.
If you haven't ever checked out Carolyn McCulley's blog "Radical Womanhood" on my sidebar's blog list, I suggest you do so. Her post from the other day "An Appeal: Don't Waste Your Vote" helped me to consider which issues should be primary when you find yourself in such a dilemma.
Regardless of who is elected (and when Adam arrives), I am confident of Who is sovereign.
Oh Really?!
He said, "it's a pocketknife."
Natalia repeated, "a pocket wife?"
It turned into the joke of the evening...he had picked it up in Switzerland a few years ago...my mom was there too, but she didn't seem to mind...and on and on... HA HA
I Love My Handyman!
I love him for many more profound reasons of course, but let me just shout it from the rooftops--he sure is handy to have around! :o)
Friday morning I had yet another doctor's appointment and when I hopped in the car...nothing but clicks. In the last few weeks, Pete had performed all kinds of "tests" to determine that our starter was probably on it's way out, so when this happened on Friday it was no mystery. So, though it wiped out his plans for Friday after a long week of work, he picked up a new one and spent the evening fighting grime and stubborn bolts. I am just so thankful for his resourcefulness and knowledge of automotive things, especially in times like these.
That was Friday.
On Saturday morning he headed out bright and early for a required recap day on a class he had taken this past summer. (Those lovely, ongoing teaching certification requirements!) Natalia woke up earlier than usual so I was scrambling to get a shower before it was too late.
When I turned on the shower I was immediately concerned about the sound it was making. It literally was like a freight train was trying to force it's way through the pipes! I shut it off and just let the water drain out of the lower spout for a minute, then tried again. Hello freight train!
Well, I didn't have time to mess around so I decided to proceed anyway. Within 30 seconds I had a disconnected showerhead hose whipping around my head, spraying water E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E ! It's a wonder I still have my head! :oP
Natalia came running into the bathroom all concerned, saying, "MOM! WHAT HAPPEN?!?!?" Of course, that meant that she had to tell everyone we saw throughout the weekend (eyebrows furrowed) that "some-ping happen!" and "the shower broke!" as if it were monumental to our life and wellbeing. (Hee Hee! Gotta' love her.) I was just thankful that no one could see me practically standing on my head, attempting to wash my long hair in the sink! Try doing that with a basketball strapped to your stomach!
So, my wonderful hubby got another handyman call...and now the shower is as good as new.
He's a keeper folks!
Peanut Butter Tandy Cake--Need I Say More?
You gotta' try this:
4 eggs
2 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. peanut butter
1 1/2 c. mini chocolate chips
1. Beat eggs until thick and lemony. Add sugar, milk and vanilla and mix well.
2. Mix flour, baking powder and salt separately, then add to egg mixture.
3. Pour into greased 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes, or until middle is set.
4. Let cool for a few minutes, then add dabs of peanut butter over top and spread when they soften a bit over the warm cake. (If you try to spread the PB right away, you'll tear up the top of the cake.)
5. Sprinkle the mini chocolate chips over top of the PB in an even layer. (You could use chocolate frosting instead, but should wait until the cake is completely cool before spreading.)
CHOCOLATE...PEANUT BUTTER...WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?!
Hands On House
When we arrived there was a large group there on a field trip, but thankfully they were finished and out of there within 15 minutes and that made all the difference in the world.
At first Natalia was simply overwhelmed--stimulation overload--that she just wandered around, not being able to focus on anything for more than a second or two. It probably was compounded by the fact that the field-trippers were at least 6 or 7 years old and there were simply too many of them to leave anything available to play with.
When we did get our chance though, boy did we have fun! It was a bit of a challenge getting any pictures of her that weren't blurred...in spite of learning to only use the sports/action shot setting on my camera when she's involved!
The Corner Grocery was what I deemed her favorite thing--I think she could have spent the day in there!
There was an agricultural section, complete with this "milk the cow"! Natalia and Kaleb both really liked sorting and stacking the eggs. I forgot to take a shot of the wall where you could pick corn--really cute.
Then there was the dress-up room with a pirate ship.
They really are best buds, even though Kaleb finally had enough of the hugs.
