My Initiation Continues...

...to having a boy, that is.

I've lost track of how many times I've been pee-ed on. Though I've had a cloth diaper always near and poised it never fails! Ha ha!

Diapering a boy is SOOOO different! All of those tiny newborn diapers I had saved from 3 years ago are useless. I'm already through my Pampers Swaddlers from the hospital and have moved on to my leftover Huggies #1's. Still though, when this little man has to go, it's like the Hoover Dam just let loose.

Tips from any of you mommas of boys out there?

I consider myself a pretty good diaperer. Keep it as high as possible in the back (the site of most leaks these days), fold down the front a bit, aim his wee-wee down, and keep the tabs snug at his waist...am I missing something?

Is it just inevitable that I'm going to go through 4-6 outfits in a 24 hour period? I honestly don't remember Natalia going through outfits this quickly due to diaper duty--mostly spit-up.

Adam is still only 7 lbs. or so, so I didn't think a bigger diaper was the solution. Maybe I need to go back to Pampers until he's bigger?

Any advice ladies?

Mmmm, I don't know. I was peed on, of course, but didn't have any problems with leaking at that age. Only blow-outs, which one can't really do much about. I only have had issues as they've gotten older and started putting their hands down their pants with wetting. :) I used all sorts of brands and didn't have an issue with either. Sorry!

Hi Krista- congratulations on your son. I ended up on your blog through Karla's. Natalia and Adan are gorgeous.
I don't usually comment on blogs, but we had the same problem with Trey's diapers. A friend of mine told me that Huggies are not made for boys. Since then others have told me the same thing. Trey soaked the car seat, swing, bouncy seat, etc when he was in Huggies but had no problems in Pampers or Luvs (we started these when he hit size 2- we had been given a lot of size 1 Pampers.). So if you try another brand, you may have more success.
Also, if you don't have this website here is one to check, along with daily deals you can look in the past posts for reviews of different diaper brands.

Good luck!

First, congratulations to both you and your hubby - Adam is beautiful!

Second, I'll agree with what Courtney said, Huggies do not work for boys - trust me, I have 2.

Thirdly, and hopefully this is helpful, be sure to pull out the diaper from under the elastic around the legs. Don't let that extra 1/2 inch of "ruffle" be caught inside the elastic or it just opens "the door" to let everything pour out. I've found most diapers stay put on their own, but I really have to work with the generic ones as they seem more stuck.

Also, keep a cloth diaper over top their bellies while changing their diapers - I found I was always too late to grab it! LOL!!

We just put our "baby" into a twin bed this weekend - he turned 2 just 4 weeks ago - how time flies!

Enjoy that little bundle!!

Ditto on doing Luvs or Pampers. I found Luvs to be the best, but as Joel got older I was okay with the Walmart ones that have "Dri" in the name.

I also put a cloth diaper or a STACK of napkins (depending on what was available) on my boy's belly before even unfastening the diaper. In fact, I'd scrunch it down in "there" over the "squirt gun and THEN remove the diaper. The shock of cold air was always what "triggered" a spray. But a wet
cloth diaper was better than a wet shirt or nightgown any day. EVentually your boy will probably be able to control the trigger effect, but no, you're not missing anything. Technique will come with practice. :) I also doubled a cloth diaper inside the disposable diaper at night, when I needed the extra protection (of maybe antoher 1/2 hour's sleep!) as muchj as the boy needed an extra layer of padding.

Ah, a topic near and dear to my heart! As an experienced mom of boys (one with amazing kidneys and bladder!), I must say I can totally relate. I'll second everyone's recommendation for Pampers - I've tried Huggies and they've never worked well for me. I always used the Pampers Swaddlers until about 3 months old, then switched to the Pampers Baby-dry since the cost per diaper is a little cheaper. Luvs are okay, too, but only when they're a little older.

I always kept a dry baby washcloth nearby for diaper changes, too. Here's another tip for overnight diapering once Adam's sleeping through the night. Max would constantly pee through his diapers when going 12 hours without being changed, even with going up a diaper size for nighttime. What finally worked for me was using the next size diaper with a maxi pad inside toward the front of the diaper.

Boys will be boys... good luck!

Hi Krista - I had the same problem with Logan when he first came home - we were going through an outfit or two for each feeding time! I did find that Pampers work better for boys - I've had friends with girls that have said they like Huggies better.

Aiming the wee-wee down seems to make a big difference too. Did you have him circumcised? We did - and once we stopped putting the Vaseline on it, the leakage seemed to get better then too.

Hope you can figure it out!! I know how frustrating it is to go through outfit after outfit.

OMG...this was so helpful! Everyone told me to buy Huggies (they all have little girls BTW). After reading this, I packed up the 3 packs of newborn Huggies I bought and I'm off to return them at Target. Sorry you had to be the guinea pig Krista, but I'm glad I didn't have to figure this one out on my own!
