Aren't They Pretty?

Well, we'll see if my first attempt works...so far nearly all of my lids have "popped". That's a good thing though--it means the lids have sealed properly.

My mom came over yesterday to help me with my 1/2 bushel, which yielded 18--16 oz. jars of small diced tomatoes. It's a good thing she did too because SOMEONE, who will remain nameless, did not nap yesterday despite many attempt on Mommy's part prior to starting the project. And it is a project. Canning is one of those things that once you start, you've got to keep going. Time is of the essence!

I asked my mom, how did you do this when my siblings and I were young? "You relied on them taking a nice long nap!" she said. :o) I'm so glad she was here. By the end of our 2 1/2 hour project I was exhausted...still hoping for that increase in energy!

Here is the end product. Aren't they pretty?

On another note, tonight Natalia and I are headed into the mall. I am still searching for a decent fitting pair of maternity jean capris. It's difficult enough for me to find the non-maternity kind, but I've decided to go to Motherhood Maternity. I'll bite the bullet and hope for a sale! (I just despise spending alot of money.)

I know I've got it pretty easy since a wide selection of maternity things are readily available these days, unlike when my mom would make her own--but it's ridiculous what they charge sometimes! One nice thing is that at least the current style for regular T-shirts is the long length--great for pregnant bellies and less costly than "maternity" T's.

Pray for success-I'm such a run in and run out shopper these days!

They are pretty. If we lived closer, I'd can with you now that I had my first stab at it this summer. It's one domestic art that I hope to carry on (since I stink at almost anything else domestic). :)

PS Do you use a pressure cooker? We used a pressure cooker w/ the beans and it goes much quicker.

Bri, you must have a rather large pressure cooker. It took about 10-15 mins. for us using the cold pack method. I can imagine it would go faster the way you mentioned, I just don't have access to a cooker that large.

Krista, I just bought a bunch of $4 and $5 cute maternity tees and blouses online at Old Navy. I also bought a pair of capris for $10. They kinda get you with their $7 shipping, but there are no maternity stores here in State College. It's getting hard to fit my pre-pregnancy pants, but thank God for the maker of the belly band!

Yes, they're pretty. Glad that I am privileged to know the end of the story....congrats on finding those capri's. You are an inspiration with all the canning and freezing you're doing this year.

Krista,
I had one horrible time finding capris!!!! I ended up buying on-line through GAP. I found a great deal, and even though a bit more expensive, they fit so much better than the pairs I bought at ON, Target, and Motherhood (I returned ALL three! haha).

Very pretty tomatoes. My dad recalls that my grandmother used to love to go down to her cellar when she was feeling poor and run her hand along the rows of canned food. It gave her a big lift. Sadly my memories of canning with my mom are negative, probably because she put my sisters and me in charge of doing dishes and waiting for the "pop". It wasn't as magical as she'd prepped us to imagine. Just a lot of work. I keep saying I"ll give it a second chance....

On a different note, can you recommend any good art-teacher sites for me? 3rd-6th grade, US History 20th century, fun projects ("academic" not craftsy).
Please leave me a comment if you get a chance. Thanks.

Cool! I was made my own jam and canned it. that was fun:-)

I know what you mean about not wanting to spend lots of money. I prefer to find a bargain on stuff (it's like going on an adventure...to find cheap quality items). I also like to make my own things. Unfortunately, clothing isn't something I'm at all good at making.

They look great - keep up the good work. Seeing the finished product (and eating it, too) makes canning so worth it!

first of all - a boy, huh? :) i read that you cold-packed your tomatoes: could you give me the recipe you used? everything i find for canning anything with tomatoes calls for a pressure cooker (and i don't have one nearly big enough!)

we still haven't gotten together and the summer is almost over!!! :( :(
