Timothy's trousers have all looked like that since he was 4. I think the boy just slides around on his knees! What's a shame is that they won't make for good hand-me-downs for Collin.
Oh, I have seen this many times. I actually do use iron on patches for my gardening pants. It is no fashion statement,but it works. Also, if you buy your kids jeans at Sears (I can usually get them for about $10-12 a pair on sale), you can return them if they get a hole. They will give you a new pair just like it, in the same size. This is part of their free Kidvantage Plan.

Maybe you could put patches on the inside before they start to wear? Then it would reinforce it enough not to wear through...ideally.
