Last week my mom handed me an article she had saved from their newspaper. It told the story of two sisters who, after losing a sister early in life to cancer, created a Know Me journal to help preserve what they knew about their sister for her children. They now are making them available online. The questions are universal, and there isn't a whole lot of space for answers as the goal is to create an overview of sorts. Childhood, Likes & Dislikes, Adulthood, Aspirations, Opinions, Personal Tastes, etc. They've also gone on to create different versions for special occasions, for the graduate, the bride-to-be, etc. I thought this was a great idea, and so I decided I would create my own version.
Some of my questions were things like:
*Describe a typical dinner growing up—the foods, smells, and routine.
*What was something that frightened or worried you as a child?
*Describe your first job, how much you made per hour, hours worked per week, etc.
*How did becoming a parent change you?
*What physical attributes do you have of your father and of your mother?
*What is your favorite time of the day and why?
I plan on buying some pretty paper and printing out the 50 or so questions before binding them. My hope is get each of our parents to fill one out. And of course we'll do one too! There are so many things that we don't share until prompted...and I think they can be a real window into our lives to future generations. Besides, there's nothing like a written record!
