Mud Sale--But No Mud

Some of you may be wondering, what in the world is a mud sale? Who would want to buy mud?

It's not actually that. The name comes from the frequent occurrence of mud at these spring-time sales which the conservative communities (mostly Amish) host. Today I got to experience one for the first time.

Imagine numerous big tents and food stands set up in a vacant lot or empty cornfield. In this case a local Amish school/community and nearby fire company co-hosted the event in an effort to raise funds. There was so much good food! Chicken Barbeque, Soft Pretzels, French Fries, Hot & Cold Sandwiches, Chicken Corn Soup, Shoo Fly Pies, Whoopie Pies, Apple Dumplings...and everything was homemade. (We went primarily to see what was being sold and to have lunch!) Outside, each tent was auctioning a certain thing: antiques, bulk food/household supplies, furniture, quilts, and lots of knick-knacks. There were also open areas selling farming equipment, hay, feed, miniature ponies, sheds and shrubbery. It was really interesting to see!

Natalia's favorite part, aside from spending some time with Grandpa and Grandma, was riding the big yellow school bus that shuttled you to the sale. She actually said to my dad, 'I wanna' ride da bus!" I enjoyed the whole experience...and am really looking forward to the apple dumplings I bought for Pete and I. My mouth is watering now!
